Thanksgiving was a true test of being a master of both worlds.  while most students went home for the entire break I was unable to as I have a full time job here in Indiana.  This made the week rather stressful as I ended up going home for the first weekend for two days then driving back, working until thanksgiving day and driving back for that then back to here.  all in all it was a lot of running around that I really did not look forward to.

everything went smoothly though and I enjoyed the week even though it kept me from getting much of anything done on the side.  I feel like it was a good journey that had to be completed whether I liked it or not.  This is like most other journeys that we take in our lives.  we dont always have a choice in the matter, some journeys are just thrown on us and we must accept.

The end to my journy is so near
My life will soon change once again
I wonder where i will go
Will it be easier?
or will it be hard
I will go on
and succeed
now

I am so very different

But am I so strange?

are you strange?

I found fridays lecture to be very interesting.  I found it to be very valuable as what we discussed in class about queer theory was much more interesting, descriptive, and helpful in understanding the concept than what the internet had to offer.

The idea that queer theory relates to feminism was pretty easy for me to understand as both deal with the problems of an underpriviledged minority.  however as we looked more at queer theory the differences became much more apparent as we found that it is more all encompasing than stricly feminism is and that it is structured differently.

The idea that people could be identified as queer in the true meaning by just looking at the activities that they participate in and the social rules that they do not follow was quite interesting.  when we discussed in class something that we do or had done in the past that was different than the norm it was easy to see why queer theory was so all encompasing because it really means anything that is strange or different from the norm.

always in the dark

with only an unknown fate

to keep you going

where will it lead you this time

when will the journy begin?

Celie Fought
With tooth and nail
she only wanted
to live a normal life
to be respected
to live
freely
so celie fought
with all she had
and won her battle
to live a normal life

T hroughout this semester I have enjoyed learning about the heroic journey and the monomyth.  It has been really interesting to learn about how every hero relates to every other hero in one way or another.  As seen in the color purple, Celie is no different.

Celie is forced into her journey through many various circumstances, most of which were very unpleasant.  for a long time Celie finds that she is unable to fight and refuses to cross the threshold into her real journey of escaping from Mr’s company.  It is only through help from the outside which comes in the form of shug avery that Celie’s quest slowly begins to move along.

Shug teaches Celie many things and Celie teaches Shug as well about being a homebody.  The scene at the dinner table is the true battle for Celie as she must finally stand up for herself and fight her way out of the situation that she has been put in.  after this when Celie leaves she enters a new world and must learn how to survive and master this new world which is very different from her previous one.

for my final project I would like to create a trivia based game of some sort.  I have not yet figured out how I am going to do the layout of the game, such as whether it will be like jeopordy or more conventional like a board game.  The questions will vary and cover many topics that we have discussed in class such as archetypes and the monomythic stages.  For this project I will most likely be working alone as I find it much easier with myschedule to not work in groups whenever I can.

poem #24 – Kyrielle

A new adventure awaited,
i could not be persuaded
The start was slow
and it began so long ago

I found many new things
never knowing what each would bring
so much more now i know
and it began so long ago

Going home is new
and the return is overdue
I’ll use my knowledge for show
and it began so long ago

Some of the best examples of being a master of both worlds comes from the comic book superheroes that we all grew up with.  almost all of these fictional heroes live two lives, one being the life of a superhero, the other being the life of a normal person living in day to day drudgery.

Spiderman was forced into his adventure when bitten by a spider and transforming.  as his journey progressed and he became more aware of what he was capable of he had to face many challenges and villains.  however because of fear for himself and family he had to keep his super identity seperate.  at first this caused quite a bit of unrest in his life until he was able to come to terms with his two personas almost like the shadow side of an archetype.  after realizing what he must do he was able to become complete and turn out to be a truly great hero while balancing his personal life on the side and mastering both.

Spiderman is just one example, there are many other examples both ficional and non fictional.  whether it be a vetern returning from a war to find that the life he left behind is not what he thought it was and must now master a new world as well as his military world.  or the college student returning home and realizing that you can never go home again to the way it was before.
